The right size passport & visa photo, from a photo you take at home

Stand in front of a plain, light wall and take a photo. Plainwall crops it to the exact size for your document, places your head and eye line inside the required ranges, checks the measurable rules, and gives you a file sized for online forms or a 4×6 sheet to print at a pharmacy or photo kiosk.

Head size, eye line and margins are measured for each document type.

How it works

Three steps. No account, no upload, no app install.

📷

1. Take a good photo

Plain light wall, even light, no shadows, face the camera, neutral expression, nothing covering your face. Ask someone to take it from about 1–1.5 m away.

📏

2. Size & check

Face detection runs on your device to find your eyes, chin and top of head. The photo is cropped to your document's size with the head and eye line placed in range, then checked against a list of measurable rules.

3. Download or print

Get a JPEG at the pixel size and file size online forms ask for (e.g. DS-160: 600×600 px, ≤ 240 KB), or a 4×6 print sheet / actual-size A4 or Letter PDF.

What you get

Private by design

Everything runs in your browser. The page makes no requests to other companies' servers, and it keeps working if you turn off Wi-Fi after it loads.

Before you start: some documents don't accept home-made photos

  • Canada passport — photos must be taken by a commercial photographer.
  • Germany passport / ID card — since May 2025, photos must be taken at the office or sent digitally by a certified photo provider.
  • UK online application — upload the original, uncropped photo from your device (GOV.UK crops it for you) or use a booth/shop photo code.
  • US, UK, Australia, India and others don't accept digitally altered photos, so Plainwall never changes your background for these documents. If your background isn't plain, retake the photo.

Supported documents

Always double-check the official rules for your application — they change.

FAQ

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The face detection models are downloaded to your browser from this site and all processing happens on your device. There is no server that receives images, and the page makes no requests to third-party servers. You can verify this in your browser's developer tools (Network tab).

Will my photo be accepted?

We can't promise that — the issuing authority always makes the final decision. Plainwall checks the measurable rules (size, head height, eye line, framing, lighting, expression where required) and links to the official rules for each document. Start with a recent, well-lit photo against a plain, light wall.

Can it change my background?

Many authorities — including the US State Department, HM Passport Office (UK), the Australian Passport Office and Passport Seva (India) — don't accept photos altered by software, so Plainwall doesn't change the background for those documents. For other documents there is an advanced option that is off by default and clearly warns you. Retaking the photo against a plain wall is always the safer choice.

How do I print it?

Download the 4×6 print sheet and order a standard 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo print at a pharmacy, photo kiosk or online photo service. Choose "fit / no crop" and cut along the thin grey lines. Prices vary by store — check locally. Some countries (e.g. Australia) require professionally printed photos on specific paper; check the rules.

Can I use it for a US visa (DS-160)?

Choose "US Visa (DS-160 digital upload)" to get a 600×600 px JPEG under 240 KB. Use an unedited photo taken against a plain white or off-white background.

Does it cost anything?

No. Plainwall is free to use and there is nothing to buy. No account is needed.

Are you affiliated with any government?

No. Plainwall is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any government agency.
